Fr. Lawrence Noronha, Veteran Bangalore Priest, Dies at 93

Bengaluru, September 22, 2026: Fr. Lawrence Noronha, a senior priest of the Archdiocese of Bangalore who served the Church for nearly seven decades, died at 4:45 a.m. on Tuesday. He was 93.

Fr. Noronha, who was ordained a priest on April 13, 1958, served the archdiocese in various pastoral and formative ministries. His ministry included parish service and priestly formation, where he accompanied young men discerning and preparing for the priesthood.

He also made a significant contribution to the wider Church through his involvement in the publication of the CCBI Lectionary, which supports the liturgical life of Catholic communities across India.

Born on December 18, 1932, Fr. Noronha was remembered for his simple lifestyle, prayerfulness and gentle manner. During his years of pastoral ministry, he accompanied families, young people, children and the elderly, while also reaching out to people facing poverty and other difficulties.

He encouraged young people to consider priestly and religious vocations and remained involved in the life of the archdiocese even in his later years.

Archbishop Peter Machado of Bangalore announced his death and commended his soul to the loving mercy of God, asking the faithful to remember him in their prayers. Funeral details will be announced later.
