Ranchi, Jharkhand, Feb. 12, 2026: The vital role of personal accompaniment in shaping future priests took centre stage at the annual meeting of Minor Seminary Rectors held on Wednesday at St. Albert’s College, Ranchi.
More than 18 rectors from Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal and Bihar gathered for the day-long deliberations, joined by members of the teaching faculty of the host institution. Archbishop Vincent Aind of Ranchi graced the occasion, lending pastoral guidance to the discussions.
Delivering the keynote address, Fr. Paul Nag, OFM Cap., described seminary formation as “a noble yet delicate mission” entrusted by Christ to formators. Speaking on the theme “The Role of Accompaniment in Seminary Formation Today,” he stressed that the primary responsibility of a formator is not merely administrative oversight but walking closely with candidates in a spirit of constant presence, availability and attentive listening.
“Formation is beautiful, but demanding,” he said, underlining that authentic accompaniment requires patience, empathy and deep personal engagement. He called for an approach rooted in integral formation, giving particular priority to human development.
Fr. Paul noted that human formation involves understanding the emotional and psychological dimensions of seminarians — their needs, fears, doubts, freedom and capacity for trust. He urged formators to encourage candidates to take responsibility for their own growth and to cultivate discernment as a lifelong habit. Corrections, he added, must be offered with sensitivity and never in a way that humiliates. Respect for cultural diversity, family backgrounds and varied educational experiences is equally essential in nurturing well-rounded clergy.
The keynote address was followed by a sharing session in which rectors reflected on the strengths and challenges faced in their respective seminaries. Many acknowledged that priestly and religious formation has become increasingly complex amid rapid social and cultural shifts.
Addressing the gathering, Archbishop Vincent Aind highlighted the unique pressures of formation in the digital age. “Seminarians are not ready-made products,” he remarked, encouraging formators to help ignite the hidden spark within each candidate so it may grow into a “blazing fire.” He called for committed and forward-looking formators capable of adapting to contemporary realities while remaining rooted in Gospel values.
The meeting began with a welcome by Fr. Ajay Kumar Xalxo, Rector of St. Albert’s College, and an opening prayer led by Fr. Gabriel Benziger. The proceedings were chaired by Fr. Peter Barla. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Fr. Jerald David and a closing prayer.
