Mysuru, January 16, 2026:
In a spirit of Christian unity and shared faith, an ecumenical gathering was held at St. Mary’s Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church, Mysuru, on January 16, marking the second anniversary of the church. The gathering brought together clergy and faithful from different Christian traditions, offering a strong witness to communion and mutual respect.
The meeting was presided over by Mor Osthathios Isaac Thirumeni, Metropolitan Bishop of the Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Diocese. Representing the Catholic Diocese of Mysore were Fr. John Sagayaraj, Diocesan Ecumenical Secretary, Mrs. Veena Williams, Joint Secretary, along with Fr. Jubilee Peter, Fr. Thomas, and Fr. John, Vicar of the parish. Several priests and lay faithful from various churches also participated in the celebration.
Addressing the gathering, Mor Osthathios Isaac Thirumeni highlighted the importance of such ecumenical encounters in fostering unity among different Christian churches. He noted that while doctrinal expressions may differ, all Christians worship the one Lord Jesus Christ. Emphasising that faith in Jesus Christ should unite all rites and denominations, he encouraged continued dialogue and fellowship among the churches.
The Bishop also expressed his appreciation for Fr. Francis Serrao, SJ, Bishop of Mysore, commending his initiative and active participation in promoting ecumenical harmony.
The programme included a sharing of the Word of God, which added spiritual depth to the gathering and strengthened the sense of communion among those present. Participants described the meeting as prayerful and fruitful, reflecting a shared commitment to Christian unity.
Sharing his reflections, Fr. John Sagayaraj expressed his joy at meeting a Jacobite Bishop for the first time, describing Mor Osthathios Isaac Thirumeni as gentle and accommodating. The ecumenical gathering thus stood as a meaningful step toward strengthening bonds of faith, friendship, and unity among the Christian communities in Mysuru.
