Vatican City, 5 December 2025 — Filming is underway for a new documentary about the Vatican Necropolis and the tomb of the Apostle Peter, with American actor Chris Pratt guiding viewers through the journey, as part of a project produced by Vatican Media, the Fabric of St. Peter and AF Films, which is set to debut in 2026 in conjunction with the 400th anniversary of the dedication of St. Peter’s Basilica.
Production is taking place within St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Necropolis, where exclusive footage will lead audiences through faith, history and archaeology linked to the discovery of Peter’s burial place. Pratt said it was “an extraordinary honour” to partner with Pope Leo and the Vatican, expressing gratitude for the trust and access provided to bring the Apostle’s legacy to the screen.
Spanish director Paula Ortiz has been entrusted with directing the film, which is written by Andrea Tornielli with support from Pietro Zander. Its release will coincide with the 400th anniversary of the inauguration and dedication of the current St. Peter’s Basilica on 18 November 1626, marking a significant milestone in the history of the Christian faith.
The documentary will trace the history of the basilica and the site of Peter’s burial, detailing how Emperor Constantine preserved the area when constructing the first large basilica and how archaeological discoveries, including excavations under the Basilica announced in 1950 by Pope Pius XII, have brought to light the Apostle’s tomb. In 1968, Pope Paul VI recognised that the mortal remains believed to be Peter’s had been discovered in a manner considered convincing by scholars and Church authorities.
