Christian Journalists to Debate AI’s Impact on Truth and Journalism in Bengaluru

BENGALURU, September 4, 2026: The growing influence of artificial intelligence on journalism, truth and human dignity will be at the centre of discussions when Christian journalists from across India meet in Bengaluru for their 31st National Convention on September 19.

Organised by the Indian Catholic Press Association (ICPA), the convention will be held at Paalana Bhavana in Benson Town under the theme, “Humanity, Dignity and Truth: Journalism Without Compromise in the Age of AI.”

The one-day gathering will bring together journalists, editors, media professionals and communicators to examine how rapidly advancing AI technologies are changing the practice of journalism and raising new questions about ethics, credibility, accountability and professional responsibility.

The discussions will also explore how journalists can safeguard truth and human dignity at a time when artificial intelligence is increasingly being used to generate, distribute and consume news.

Focus on AI and journalism

The key discussion of the convention will be a panel on AI and emerging technologies and their implications for journalism.

The session will be moderated by Jesuit media commentator Fr Cedric Prakash. Panellists include Maya Sharma, author and former Executive Editor (South) of NDTV; Akkai Padmashali, author and transgender rights activist; Liz Mathew, Deputy Editor of The Indian Express; and Fr Roshan Rodrigues, Editor of The Examiner Weekly.

The panel will be followed by an interaction with participants, allowing journalists to raise questions on the opportunities and risks presented by AI in news gathering, production and dissemination.

Vinod Jose to deliver keynote

Dr. Vinod Jose, former Editor of The Caravan, will deliver the keynote address at the inaugural session.

Archbishop Peter Machado of Bengaluru will deliver the inaugural address, while Fr Henry D’Souza will be the Guest of Honour. ICPA Ecclesiastical Advisor Fr Rayarala Vijaya Kumar will also address the gathering.

ICPA President Fr Suresh Mathew OFM Cap will deliver the President’s Message, while ICPA Secretary Sr Tessy Jacob SSps will welcome the participants.

The inaugural programme will open with a tribute to deceased ICPA members M. L. Satyan, Sr Edith Elengikal SCCG, Sr Neninga Maria Menezes and Fr Antony Ittikunnath OCD. A prayer dance and lighting of the lamp are also scheduled.

Theme book to be released

The morning session will conclude with the launch of a theme book focusing on journalism, truth, human dignity and ethical responsibility in the age of artificial intelligence.

The ICPA said the convention is intended to provide Christian journalists and media professionals with a forum to critically engage with emerging challenges in journalism and reaffirm the profession’s commitment to truth, human dignity and ethical practice.

The convention will begin at 9 a.m. on September 19 at Paalana Bhavana, Bengaluru.
