Udupi, November 20, 2024: The Udupi District Unit of the All Karnataka United Christian Forum for Human Rights (AKUCFHR) was inaugurated on November 19 at the Anugraha Pastoral Center, Kukkunje, Udupi. The event, attended by 45 representatives from diverse Christian denominations, marked a significant step toward promoting Christian unity, social harmony and collective advocacy for human rights.
Rt Rev. Hemachandra, Bishop of the CSI Karnataka Southern Diocese, highlighted the Christian mission of fostering love and unity inspired by Jesus Christ. He urged the faithful to transcend denominational divides, saying, “We the Christians are invited to be the light and salt of the earth by our master Jesus Christ.” He called for Christians to serve as role models in harmony and coexistence.
Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo in his presidential address, stressed the strength found in unity. He introduced the "ABCD" framework of the United Christian Forum, emphasizing its role in fostering solidarity and ensuring collective success. He stated, “Unity is strength. United, we can fight for our community’s rights and achieve success. Division leads to defeat.” Bishop Lobo also commended the newly formed Udupi unit for its dedication to the mission of AKUCFHR and called for collective action to promote peace in today’s climate of mistrust.
The inauguration also honoured Bishop Lobo’s 75th birthday and recognized key figures for their contributions to Christian unity. Fr. Baptist Pais, National Executive Secretary of the Ecumenism Commission and Fr. Denis D’Sa, newly appointed National Member of the Commission, were felicitated during the program.
Rev. Dr. J.B. Saldanha, Public Relations Officer of the Mangalore Diocese, conducted an orientation session on the Common Minimum Program for AKUCFHR. He detailed the Forum’s objectives, which include fostering mutual respect and promoting joint social action, and engaged participants in a discussion about challenges and strategies for achieving Christian unity.
