Pilar, Goa, November 20, 2024: Thousands of devotees gathered at Pilar Hillock on November 20 to commemorate the 97th death anniversary of Venerable Agnelo de Souza, a revered member of the Society of Pilar. The solemn occasion was marked by a Eucharistic celebration led by Bishop Sebastião Mascarenhas of Baroda, who urged the faithful to draw inspiration from Ven. Agnelo’s life, rooted in his deep relationship with Jesus and bold proclamation of the Gospel. The day witnessed spiritual reflections, cultural traditions and prayers for the ongoing canonization process of Ven. Agnelo.

Delivering the homily on the theme, “Inspired by Ven. Agnelo, let us be dynamic evangelisers of the Word of God,” Bishop Mascarenhas emphasized Ven. Agnelo’s profound spirituality. “Ven. Agnelo did not construct buildings or hospitals, but instead, he brought the faithful closer to Jesus through his spiritual life” he noted. The Bishop further reflected on Ven. Agnelo’s legacy of holiness, recounting how people began seeking his intercession at his grave in Rachol.

The Eucharistic celebration was concelebrated by 82 priests, including Bishop Theodore Mascarenhas of Daltonganj, Bishop Visuvasam Selvaraj of Port Blair, Fr. Nazareth Fernandes SFX (Superior General, Society of Pilar), Fr. Joseph Fernandes SFX (Central Delegate Superior, Pilar Society), Fr. Stephen D’Souza SFX (Vicar General of the Society of Pilar) and Fr. Joaquim Rebelo.

Fr. Nazareth Fernandes, Superior General of the Society of Pilar, shared updates on Ven. Agnelo’s beatification process, assuring devotees that the Vatican’s Dicastery for the Cause of Saints is actively involved. He encouraged continued prayers for the cause, stating, "God will, in His time, do what is necessary."

Novena Masses, held from November 11 to 19, paved the way for the celebration, focusing on various prayer intentions including families, youth, civic leaders and environmental causes. The services were conducted in Konkani, English, Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam, ensuring inclusivity.

A highlight of the Novena was a special Mass for the Sick, during which the faithful were anointed with the Oil of the Sick and a Night Vigil led by Fr. Pedro Costa, Parish Priest of Consua Church.

Among the attendees were 50 faithful from the Andaman Island. The tradition of Chotanagpur, where the host welcomes guests by washing their hands, was observed during the Mass as the celebrants approached the altar. The solemn celebration at Pilar Hillock, known for its breathtaking views of the Arabian Sea and surrounding mountains, drew thousands seeking blessings and inspiration from Ven. Agnelo’s life and mission.

Born on January 21, 1869, in Anjuna, Goa, Ven. Agnelo de Souza is remembered for his exemplary service to the Church and his commitment to spreading the Gospel. His canonization process remains a focal point of devotion for many, with devotees ardently praying for his elevation to sainthood.
