Pope Francis Creates Pontifical Committee for World Day of Children

Rome, November 21, 2024: Pope Francis established the Pontifical Committee for the World Day of Children to promote the annual celebration, advocate for children's rights and dignity and ensure sustained pastoral care for young ones on November 20. The Pope appointed Fr. Enzo Fortunato, O.F.M. Conv., as the Committee's first President, entrusting it with organizing and animating the event that emphasizes the Church’s mission towards children worldwide.

In his Chirograph announcing the initiative, Pope Francis highlighted the unique perspective of children, describing their gaze as one of awe and openness to mystery- qualities often overlooked by adults. He called on Christians to embrace a child-like sense of wonder as part of their faith journey.

The Pontifical Committee aims to ensure that the World Day of Children goes beyond a single event, fostering continuous efforts to make pastoral care for children a priority in evangelical and pedagogical approaches. Pope Francis stressed that this mission reflects the Church's commitment to nurturing the spiritual, emotional and social well-being of children globally.
