Chandigarh Diocesan Pastoral Council Meeting Focuses on Ecological Conservation and Sustainability

Chandigarh, 1 April, 2025– The Diocesan Pastoral Council (DPC) Meeting took place at the Diocesan Pastoral Centre, Chandigarh, on 31 March, with the theme Laudato Si': A Call to Care for Our Mother Earth. The gathering underscored the Church’s commitment to environmental responsibility and practical strategies for ecological conservation.

The meeting commenced with registration and tea, followed by an opening hymn to the Holy Spirit led by Patiala Deanery. A ceremonial lighting of the lamp and sapling watering symbolised dedication to environmental stewardship. A Scripture reading from Genesis 2:4-9 by Karnal Deanery and the recitation of the Jubilee Prayer 2025 set the spiritual tone.

Mrs. Rosey, Joint-Secretary of the DPC, welcomed participants before Mr. Sameer Lakra, Secretary of the DPC, presented the minutes of the previous meeting and the Regional Catholic Council’s action plan, which the council approved.

The Bishop’s keynote address highlighted the importance of Laudato Si’ and the Church’s role in ecological conservation. Expert speakers followed with insightful presentations on biblical perspectives on creation, the ecological crisis, and the need for ecological conversion.

A tree plantation activity reinforced the environmental message before deanery-wise group discussions explored ways to implement Laudato Si’ principles locally. The meeting concluded with key action plans, expressions of gratitude from Simla Deanery, a final prayer by Bhatinda Deanery, the Bishop’s blessing, and a fellowship meal.

The DPC Meeting successfully reinforced the Church’s role in promoting environmental responsibility and practical steps for sustainability within pastoral activities.
