New Delhi, 24 October, 2025 — Archbishop Andrews Thazhath of Thrissur, President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) met with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State, where he extended an official invitation to the Cardinal to inaugurate the upcoming CBCI General Assembly in India.
During the meeting, the Archbishop conveyed the Indian bishops’ desire for greater solidarity and collaboration with the Holy See. He emphasised the significance of the event in India, noting that the General Assembly will provide a major opportunity for the Church in India to engage with global Catholic leadership and present its pastoral priorities.
The invitation marks a strategic step for the Indian Church, which welcomes the possibility of Cardinal Parolin’s participation as a symbol of Vatican-level support and engagement. The meeting also touched on broader issues of partnership, evangelisation and the Church’s role in Indian society, with an aim to strengthen ties between India’s Catholic community and the universal Church.
The CBCI General Assembly, scheduled to bring together bishops and major Church leaders from across India, is expected to address critical themes such as social justice, inter-religious dialogue and the Church’s contribution to national life. The invitation to Cardinal Parolin reflects the CBCI’s intent to align these discussions with the global priorities of the Holy See
