Goa Talitha Kum Unit Elects New Team, Steps Up Focus on Human Trafficking

Goa, September 27, 2026: The Goa Unit of Amrat Talitha Kum India elected a new committee at its regional meeting held at Pilar on September 26, with human trafficking and other social concerns emerging as key areas of focus.

Sr. Jerysa Pereira SFN was elected coordinator, Sr. Myra D’Costa HC secretary and Sr. Shirley Fernandes SRA treasurer.

Held on the theme, “Social Evils in Goa: A Special Focus on Human Trafficking,” the meeting brought together religious to reflect on vulnerabilities contributing to trafficking and other forms of exploitation in the state.

Fr. Franky Fernandes OFM Cap., who addressed the gathering, called for coordinated efforts to prevent human trafficking and protect the dignity of vulnerable people. He highlighted the particular risks faced by young people, including those who spend prolonged periods in prison without adequate family support or livelihood opportunities. Migration, he noted, can also expose people to greater risks of exploitation.

Describing human trafficking as a “crime against humanity,” Fr. Franky said effective intervention requires collaboration among individuals, organisations and institutions.

"We cannot handle these things alone. We need many hands for Prevention, Protection and Rehabilitation. We go forth to break invisible chains and restore human dignity,” he said.

He urged Amrat members to strengthen networks with other stakeholders and emphasised prevention, protection and rehabilitation as essential components of the response to human trafficking.

Fr. Franky also reflected on the role of religious in accompanying people affected by poverty, exploitation and other forms of human suffering. He stressed the need to remain rooted in prayer while translating spiritual commitment into concrete action and compassionate accompaniment.

Sr. Philomena Manimala AASC, Coordinator of Amrat Talitha Kum India in Karwar Diocese, spoke about the organisation’s work, while Sr. Dhanam Athisayam and Sr. Crina Cardozo SFN shared their experiences.

Sr. Laurenca Konganvar FC welcomed the participants, while Sr. Crina Cardozo SFN, an Executive Member of Amrat Talitha Kum India, anchored the programme. Sr. Myra D’Costa HC proposed the vote of thanks.
