CBCI President Calls for Protection of Freedom, Dignity and Justice on Independence Day

New Delhi, August 15, 2026 — CBCI President Anthony Cardinal Poola has called on the people of India to renew their commitment to freedom, justice, equality and human dignity, urging citizens to uphold the constitutional values that form the foundation of the nation.

In his Independence Day message, Cardinal Poola paid tribute to the sacrifices of the freedom fighters and stressed that India’s hard-won freedom must be protected and preserved by every citizen. He said the true strength of the nation lies not in determining which religion is greater, but in safeguarding the dignity of every person and building a society where no one is left behind.

The Cardinal said that genuine freedom must be reflected in humanity, justice, equality and the upliftment of the poor, marginalised and downtrodden. He also expressed concern over incidents of violence, intimidation, atrocities and mob lynching affecting members of the Christian community in different parts of the country, and appealed to the Government and all authorities to safeguard constitutional freedoms and ensure justice wherever required.

Highlighting the Christian community’s contribution to nation-building, Cardinal Poola noted that Christians have served India for generations through education, healthcare, social service and humanitarian assistance, particularly among the poor and vulnerable.

He also reiterated his appeal to the Government to repeal the proposed FCRA Amendment Bill, expressing concern that its provisions could seriously hinder charitable institutions from continuing their humanitarian mission.

Concluding his message, Cardinal Poola urged all citizens to reaffirm their commitment to an India where freedom is respected, diversity is celebrated and every individual is treated with dignity.
