Catholic Lay Organisation In Manipur Call For Peace & Reconciliation

Imphal, May 15, 2026: Amid continuing violence and unrest in Manipur, the lay Catholic organisations of the Archdiocese of Imphal have issued a strong appeal for peace, reconciliation, and respect for human dignity across the conflict-hit state.

In a joint press statement released on May 14, the All Manipur Catholic Union, Manipur Catholic Women Organisation, and Manipur Catholic Youth Organisation urged all communities to “safeguard peace, uphold human dignity, and restore harmony in our land.”

Describing the present crisis as a time marked by “fear, violence, displacement, hatred, and deep emotional wounds,” the organisations lamented the suffering of countless innocent families whose homes have been destroyed and lives uprooted by the ongoing conflict.

The Catholic bodies appealed to individuals, civil society groups, and armed organisations to reject violence and embrace “compassion, dialogue, reconciliation, and peaceful coexistence.” They strongly condemned the killing of innocent civilians and denounced every act of violence that threatens the sanctity of human life.

“No grievance or conflict can justify the taking of innocent lives or the spreading of hatred among communities,” the statement emphasised.

The organisations also called for the protection and neutrality of religious leaders, humanitarian workers, and religious institutions serving affected communities without discrimination. Stressing the sacredness of such spaces and missions, the statement said places of worship and humanitarian centres “must never become targets of fear, intimidation, or violence.”

Expressing deep sorrow over recent incidents in the state, the organisations mourned the deaths of senior church leaders belonging to the delegation of the Thadou Baptist Association and extended prayers and solidarity to the bereaved families and all victims of the violence.

Concern was also raised over the abduction of two young Salesians of Don Bosco brothers from the Sapermeina area of Kangpokpi along with other civilians who were reportedly taken hostage. The statement noted with relief that the two Salesian brothers were later released.

Calling the ongoing unrest “a painful juncture in our history,” the organisations urged communities to rise above hatred, vengeance, and division, while reaffirming their shared responsibility to protect life, uphold justice, and secure a peaceful future for coming generations.

The appeal further encouraged responsible use of social media, urging people to avoid spreading hatred and misinformation and instead use digital platforms to promote understanding, trust, and peace.

Concluding their statement, the Catholic organisations prayed for lasting peace in Manipur and expressed hope that healing, dialogue, compassion, and mutual understanding would guide the people of the state toward reconciliation and unity.
