Catholic Bioethics Workshop Equips Nursing Students for Ethical Healthcare in Ranchi

Mandar, Ranchi, August 2, 2026: Seventy-two nursing students, faculty members and staff took part in a Catholic Bioethics Dissemination Workshop organised by the CCBI Bioethics Forum at the Constant Lievens Academy of Health Sciences, Mandar, Ranchi, focusing on ethical decision-making and the dignity of the human person in healthcare.

The workshop was conducted by Fr. Charles Davis, Director of the CCBI Bioethics Forum, as part of the Forum’s nationwide initiative to promote Catholic bioethics and encourage the establishment of Hospital Ethics Committees in Catholic healthcare institutions.

Welcoming the participants, Fr. Sijo Kunnel, Director of the Constant Lievens Academy of Health Sciences, stressed the need for ethical formation alongside professional and clinical training. He highlighted the importance of preparing healthcare workers who combine competence with compassion, integrity and Gospel values.

The sessions examined Catholic teaching on human dignity, ethical decision-making, reproductive ethics, end-of-life care, social justice and the mission of Catholic healthcare.

Interactive discussions and case studies enabled participants to apply moral principles to real-life healthcare situations, with particular emphasis on compassionate and patient-centred care.

A selected group of participants also completed a Bioethics Feedback and Attitude Questionnaire designed to assess their understanding of key bioethical principles, ethical decision-making and their confidence in addressing complex healthcare dilemmas. The feedback will be used by the CCBI Bioethics Forum to improve future formation programmes and assess learning outcomes.

Participants actively engaged in the discussions and raised questions on contemporary bioethical challenges. Several appreciated the practical, case-based methodology and expressed a renewed commitment to protecting human dignity, providing compassionate care and exercising ethical discernment in their future healthcare ministry.

The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks by Sr. Florina MMS, Principal of the Nursing School. She expressed gratitude to Fr. Charles Davis, Fr. Sijo Kunnel, Fr. Nibin James and the participants for their contribution to the programme.

The workshop reaffirmed the commitment of the CCBI Bioethics Forum and the Constant Lievens Academy of Health Sciences to strengthening ethical formation and promoting compassionate healthcare inspired by Catholic teaching.
