Mysuru, Feb. 5, 2026: The Organisation for the Development of the People (ODP), Mysuru, observed World Cancer Day 2026 at its campus, reaffirming its commitment to solidarity, compassion and sustained support for people battling cancer. The observance was held under the theme “SPARSHA – Instilling Hope,” focusing on awareness, encouragement and community-based care.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Pradeep P., Surgical Oncologist at Narayana Health Hospital, explained the medical aspects of cancer in a simple and reassuring manner, helping participants better understand the disease, available treatments and the importance of early care. The programme brought together medical professionals, community leaders and representatives of social service organisations to promote awareness and offer moral support to patients and their families.
Highlighting the importance of collective strength, Staney Lobo, Vice President of the Konkani Christian Association, spoke on the role of unity, culture and community in standing with those affected by serious illnesses. Mahadevaswamy, Regional Manager of Sangamitra, underlined the need for organised and sustained social support systems as an essential component of comprehensive cancer care.
A key highlight of the observance was the distribution of financial assistance to 80 cancer patients, amounting to ₹7.17 lakh. Of these, 22 patients in the first and second stages of cancer received ₹1.62 lakh, while 58 patients in the third and fourth stages were supported with ₹5.55 lakh. The aid was provided through cheques as a tangible expression of solidarity and hope.
The organisers noted that development is not measured merely by statistics, but by the relief, dignity and hope experienced by those in need. The programme echoed the global World Cancer Day theme, “United by Unique,” emphasising that while every cancer journey is different, collective action can significantly reduce suffering and inequality.
The observance was guided by Fr. Tenny Kurian, Director of ODP, and Fr. John Fernandis, Assistant Director, who reiterated the organisation’s commitment to upholding human dignity and extending compassionate service to vulnerable sections of society.
