Baptist Church Leaders Killed in Manipur Ambush; Christian Forum Decries ‘Brutal and Inhuman’ Attack

Manipur, May 13, 2026: In a chilling act of violence that has sent shockwaves through Christian communities across Northeast India, several Baptist church leaders were ambushed and killed in Manipur, with others left critically injured. The attack, targeting unarmed pastors and church workers, has drawn strong condemnation from the United Christian Forum of North East India (UCFNEI), which described the killings as a “brutal and inhuman act of violence.”

According to a statement issued by UCFNEI spokesperson Allen Brooks, the victims were senior leaders from the Kuki Baptist community, known for their lifelong commitment to ministry, peacebuilding, and spiritual leadership. They were reportedly travelling on a public road when they were ambushed, underscoring the vulnerability of civilians in a region already scarred by prolonged ethnic unrest.

“This is not merely an attack on individuals, but an assault on the sanctity of life and the spirit of brotherhood in Northeast India,” the statement read. The forum emphasised that no political or ethnic grievance could justify the killing of unarmed religious leaders who dedicated their lives to reconciliation and service.

The slain pastors were widely respected figures associated with the Manipur Baptist Convention and the Kuki Church Leaders Forum. Their deaths have left a deep void within their communities, many of whom are already grappling with the consequences of ongoing violence.

Expressing solidarity with the bereaved families and the wider Kuki Baptist community, UCFNEI called for immediate and decisive action. The organisation urged both the Government of India and the Manipur state authorities to launch a thorough and impartial investigation, ensuring that those responsible for the killings are swiftly brought to justice.

The forum also raised alarm over the safety of Christian minorities and church leaders in conflict-affected areas, appealing for enhanced protection measures to prevent further targeted violence. “The continued loss of innocent lives points to an urgent need for accountability and proactive intervention,” the statement noted.

The attack comes against the backdrop of persistent ethnic tensions in Manipur, where cycles of violence in recent years have claimed hundreds of lives and displaced thousands. In this fragile context, the killing of religious leaders—often seen as agents of peace—marks a particularly grave escalation.

UCFNEI further appealed for renewed efforts toward dialogue, reconciliation, and healing among communities, warning that unchecked violence risks deepening divisions. It also called upon Christian denominations, civil society groups, and all people of goodwill to unite in prayer and peaceful advocacy for justice.

As the region mourns yet another tragic loss, the Church stands in solidarity with the victims and their families, praying for the eternal repose of those killed and the swift recovery of the injured, even as it continues to seek justice and lasting peace.
