Kolkata, September 21, 2025 – Archbishop Elias Frank officially succeeded Archbishop Thomas D’Souza as the Metropolitan Archbishop of Calcutta following the formal acceptance of Archbishop D’Souza’s resignation on Saturday afternoon. The transition marks the beginning of a new chapter in the leadership of the Archdiocese of Calcutta.
Archbishop Thomas D’Souza, 75, also formally announced his retirement through an official communique, concluding a distinguished tenure defined by dedication to the Church, interfaith dialogue, social justice, and education. Known for his progressive vision, Archbishop Thomas took charge of the archdiocese following the tenure of the late Archbishop Lucas Sircar and gained widespread respect both within and outside the Catholic community. He currently serves as President of the United Interfaith Foundation (UIF), promoting harmony and cooperation among diverse religious communities.
As Archbishop Emeritus, Thomas will now continue his service of the people at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Barasat, where he has chosen to retire. The Archdiocese of Calcutta extended its best wishes on social media, praying for peace, joy, and continued blessings in his retirement.
A Thanksgiving Mass will be held on Sunday, 28 September, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary, Murgihatta, Kolkata. Archbishop Elias Frank will concelebrate the Mass with Archbishop Emeritus Thomas and other diocesan priests. The Apostolic Nuncio, His Excellency Leopoldo Girelli, will also be in attendance.
