October 24, 2026: As the Church prepares to remember the faithful departed, the All Souls Novena invites Catholics to turn their love and remembrance into nine days of prayer, entrusting the souls of their loved ones to God’s infinite mercy.
Death may separate us from those we love, but the Church’s tradition of prayer keeps alive the hope that, in God, love finds its fulfilment beyond the grave. From 24 October to 1 November, Catholics are invited to observe the All Souls Novena, a nine-day devotion dedicated to praying for the souls of the departed in preparation for All Souls’ Day on 2 November.
The novena offers an opportunity to remember deceased family members, relatives and friends, as well as those who have no one to pray for them. Through these prayers, the faithful seek God’s forgiveness and mercy for the departed, asking Him to welcome them into the eternal joy of heaven.
The devotion also remembers those who died suddenly, endured suffering during their lives, or lost their lives in accidents, natural disasters and other tragedies. It includes prayers for deceased priests, religious, missionaries and consecrated persons who dedicated their lives to serving the Church. The faithful are also invited to pray for those who died with unresolved conflicts or broken relationships, entrusting their lives and struggles to God’s infinite compassion.
Each day of the novena centres on a particular intention while maintaining a common pattern of prayer. The faithful begin with the Sign of the Cross, followed by prayers for the departed and the traditional invocation for eternal rest. The Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be form part of the daily devotion.
All Souls’ Day, observed on 2 November, holds a special place in the Catholic tradition as the Church remembers all the faithful departed. Rooted in the belief in the communion of saints and the hope of eternal life, the day reminds Catholics of their spiritual bond with those who have died and the importance of praying for their souls.
Through the All Souls Novena, the faithful are encouraged to express their love for the departed through prayer and remembrance, trusting in God’s mercy and looking forward to the hope of eternal life and reunion in His heavenly kingdom.
The All Souls Novena begins on 24 October and concludes on 1 November, ahead of All Souls’ Day on 2 November.
