Sindri Pahad, Daltonganj, 11 March, 2025: In a powerful display of faith, 9,000 Christians from across the Daltonganj Diocese gathered at Sindri Pahad in Badi Khajuri Parish to commemorate the Jubilee of the Passion of Christ on March 9. Led by Bishop Theodore Mascarenhas, the faithful climbed the 1,800-foot mountain while praying the Way of the Cross, culminating in a solemn Mass at the summit.
The pilgrimage saw participation from people of all ages—mothers carrying young children, elderly devotees, priests, nuns, and laypeople—all united in prayer. Bishop Mascarenhas, deeply moved by the devotion of the crowd, especially mothers ascending the steep path with their children, praised the strength of their faith.
"Learn to live your faith within your family and society, and sow the seeds of faith in your children," he urged in his sermon.
In an interview with Catholic Connect, Bishop Mascarenhas reflected on the significance of the gathering. “We celebrated Mass on top of the mountain with about 30 priests concelebrating. It was a unique experience for everyone, with a deeply spiritual atmosphere.”
Despite the massive crowd, the event remained orderly. “The people were incredibly disciplined. We had no police force present, only about 100 volunteers from the parish managing everything,” he noted. “God’s providence was truly protecting us.” Recognising that not everyone could make the climb, the bishop ensured that Mass was also celebrated at the foot of the mountain for those unable to ascend.
Expressing his admiration for the community, he added, “The faithful are very enthusiastic, positive, and supportive of every initiative by the Church.”
The event began with the Jubilee Cross being carried to the summit, accompanied by prayers and hymns. Following the Way of the Cross, Bishop Mascarenhas led the Eucharistic celebration, marking a historic moment for the diocese.
Among the clergy present were Vicar General Fr. Sanjay Gidh, Fr. Martin D'Souza, Fr. Suman Minj, and Bishop’s Secretary Fr. Amar Kerketta, along with several religious brothers and sisters.
The overwhelming turnout reflected the deep faith and commitment of the Christian community. The Jubilee celebration on Sindri Pahad stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the faithful, carrying forward the message of Christ’s sacrifice and love.
