Youth Reflect on Media Addiction and Career Building

Tripura, October 15, 2024: The Ambassa Deanery in Tripura hosted a three-day youth convention from October 11 to 13, bringing together over 149 participants to discuss media literacy, career building, and the challenges faced by today’s youth. The event, which featured presentations, group discussions and entertainment aimed to empower young people with tools to navigate modern societal influences and build sustainable futures.

Fr. Ivan D’Souza, SVD, Secretary for Social Communication in the Agartala Diocese, welcomed the attendees and introduced key office bearers and representatives from all participating parishes. He led the convention’s core session on media literacy, addressing the influence of advertisements, movies, consumerism, violence and mobile technology on youth. "It is crucial for us to understand how media shapes our perceptions and behaviors," he emphasized.

Following his input, participants formed twelve discussion groups to reflect on the impact of mobile technology. Several attendees expressed concerns about mobile addiction, online shopping habits and the rise of digital scams. "Mobile has harmed us and it has become an addiction for many of us. We waste time on it, go to bed late, and pressure our parents for the latest devices," one participant shared.

Other notable sessions included Fr. Arun Minj, SVD, who discussed "Building a Sustainable Career," and Dr. Asok Debbarma, who provided insights on "The Effects of Drugs on Mental Health and Biblical Guidance for Avoiding Substance Abuse." Dr. Debbarma highlighted the interconnectedness of technology and substance abuse, warning that mobile communication has contributed to youth becoming victims of drugs.

Fr. Lawrence Darlong, Diocesan Secretary for the Youth Commission, underscored the role of youth in the Church’s mission, urging active participation in Church activities. “Youth are the vibrant force of the Church and must actively contribute to its mission,” he remarked.

The event concluded with an action planning session, where the youth discussed future initiatives at the parish level. Many participants described the convention as a valuable experience, providing insights into media literacy, fostering personal connections and offering guidance for their future.
