Pope Francis to New Cardinals- elect: "Keep your eyes raised, hands joined, and feet bare"

Vatican city, October 13, 2024: In an emotional personal letter, Pope Francis has urged 21 newly appointed cardinals to embody three essential attitudes: "eyes raised, hands joined and feet bare." This poignant call to service emphasizes the importance of expansive love, fervent prayer, and compassionate action.

In his letter, published today at the official website of the Vatican, the Pope stressed that cardinals must "lengthen their gaze and broaden their heart" to serve the Church effectively. He invoked the legacy of St. John of the Cross, encouraging the new cardinals to contemplate the pierced side of Christ.

"Prayer is essential for shepherding the flock of Christ," he stressed, underscoring the importance of seeking and following God’s will in the face of a world filled with challenges. He addressed pressing global issues, including war, persecution, hunger, and poverty, reminding the cardinals of their duty to respond with compassion.

"Your feet must touch the harsh realities of our world," the Pope implored, calling for a commitment to mercy and action in response to the suffering around them.

The new cardinals, hailing from diverse backgrounds and nations, have been exhorted to uphold these values as they assume their elevated roles within the Catholic Church.

Pope Francis had revealed plans to hold a Consistory for the creation of new Cardinals on December 8, 2024, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, during the Angelus address on the first Sunday of October.

The Consistory, will take place between two significant events: the conclusion of the Second Session of the Synod on Synodality and the opening of the 2025 Jubilee of Hope.

The Pope emphasized the global diversity of the Cardinal-elects, stating, "Their origins express the universality of the Church, proclaiming God's merciful love to all people on earth."

Pope Francis requested prayers for the future Cardinals, saying, "Let's pray they may confirm their adherence to Christ, the merciful High Priest, and assist me in my ministry as Bishop of Rome for the good of all God's holy people."

Following the Consistory, the College of Cardinals will expand to 256 members, with 141 Cardinal electors.
