Pope Highlights Suffering of Middle East Christians During Holy Week

Vatican City, March 29, 2026 — Pope Leo XIV has called attention to the suffering of Christians in the Middle East, warning that many are unable to celebrate Holy Week due to ongoing conflict.

Speaking at the conclusion of Palm Sunday Mass in the Vatican, the Pope said the Church must not forget those who “truly share in [Christ’s] suffering” as it reflects on the Lord’s Passion.

He described the situation of Middle Eastern Christians as a “trial” that appeals to the conscience of the world, noting that war has prevented many from fully participating in the sacred rites of Holy Week.

At the beginning of Holy Week, we are closer than ever in prayer to the Christians of the Middle East, who suffer the consequences of a terrible conflict and in many cases cannot fully live the rites of these holy days,” he said.

The Pope urged the faithful to pray to the “Prince of Peace” to support communities affected by war and to open “concrete paths of reconciliation and peace”.

Before leading the Angelus prayer, Pope Leo XIV also remembered seafarers caught in conflict, offering prayers for the dead, the injured and their families. He emphasised that “earth, sky and sea” are created for life and peace, not violence.

He further called for prayers for migrants who have died at sea, particularly those who recently lost their lives off the coast of Crete.

The appeal came as the Church entered Holy Week, a period marked by reflection on Christ’s Passion, with the Pope urging solidarity with all those enduring suffering and conflict worldwide.
