Bridging Cultures: A Shillong Youth’s Quest for Spiritual Growth in Taizé

In a world often defined by rapid change and digital connections, Ibahunlang Nongrum, a spirited young woman from Upper Shillong, has taken a path less traveled. She embarked on a transformative solo journey to Taizé, France, a pilgrimage that would not only fulfill a long-held dream but also reshape her understanding of community, faith, and personal identity.

For Ibahunlang, the allure of Taizé has always been strong. This renowned Christian community is celebrated for its emphasis on prayer, meditation and music- a place where spirituality and togetherness flourish. “I received a phone call that excited me, an international solo trip to France; the land of bread and cheese,” she recalled, her anticipation palpable as she prepared for the adventure of a lifetime. Upon landing in France, she was greeted by a friendly volunteer holding a sign with her name. This simple gesture ignited her enthusiasm for what lay ahead.

As Ibahunlang settled into life at Taizé, she found herself surrounded by a vibrant tapestry of individuals from diverse nationalities, races, denominations and cultural backgrounds. “Spending time connecting with them made me realize that, while we are all unique, the obstacles and struggles we face are universal,” she reflected. One of the most exhilarating experiences for her was being chosen for the singing support team, where she joyfully sang Taizé chants in various languages. “Singing those Taizé chants is such a thrill,” she exclaimed, reinforcing her faith and bringing her closer to her Creator.

Her journey wasn’t solely about spiritual enrichment; it also involved hands-on service. Ibahunlang volunteered in the El-Abiodh kitchen, assisting in meal preparation for fellow participants. “Lending a hand gives me great satisfaction,” she shared, recalling the fun and camaraderie fostered while working alongside others. The shared labor created bonds that transcended linguistic and cultural barriers, as laughter echoed through the kitchen. The brothers and sisters at Taizé, who care for the participants, exemplified love, kindness, humility and generosity, creating a warm atmosphere where Ibahunlang felt a true sense of belonging.

A standout moment of her stay was participating in “Prayer around the Cross,” where the lyrics and melodies of the songs prompted her to reflect deeply on her life and identity. “The song lyrics and melody led me to ponder more about my life,” she explained, revealing how this experience helped her find answers to some lingering existential questions. Ibahunlang expressed gratitude to those who supported her journey, including Archbishop Victor Lyngdoh of Shillong and Fr. Tobias Kharngapkynta, the Parish Priest of St. Paul’s Parish.

Fr. John Barman, Director of NERYC, noted, “Taizé prayer is an integral part of our ICYM-NE. Shillong has a strong Taizé team and her experience will further enrich the youth in Northeast India.”

Ibahunlang’s three-month stay in Taizé has left an indelible mark on her spirit. “Taizé and its people will always hold a special place in my heart,” she affirmed, her voice steady as she spoke of the profound impact the experience has had on her faith and service. As she returns to Shillong, Ibahunlang carries not just memories of a solo journey but the wisdom and love of a community that transcends borders, a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the unifying power of faith.
