Bishop of Gulbarga Calls New Priest to Be a Shepherd After Christ’s Heart

Gulbarga, Karnataka, January 1, 2026: Focusing on the heart of priestly ministry, Bishop Dr. Robert Miranda, in his homily during the priestly ordination of Deacon Ancy Vion Lobo on December 30, called the newly ordained priest to model his life on Christ the Good Shepherd—rooted in prayer, fidelity to the Word of God, and compassionate service.

Preaching during the solemn Eucharistic celebration at the Mother of Divine Grace Cathedral, Bishop Miranda reminded Fr. Ancy that priesthood is not a position of honour but a call to self-giving love. He urged him to remain deeply united with Christ through prayer, noting that only a priest who listens attentively to God can truly guide God’s people.

The Bishop emphasised that pastoral charity must be the defining mark of priestly life. He encouraged the new priest to be close to the poor, the marginalised, and those on the peripheries, especially within the mission territories of the Diocese of Gulbarga. A priest, he said, is called to be a sign of hope, healing, and unity in a fragmented world.

Highlighting obedience and humility as essential virtues, Bishop Miranda reminded Fr. Ancy that authentic priestly authority flows from service. He exhorted him to proclaim the Gospel with courage and simplicity, allowing his life to become a living witness to God’s mercy.

The homily set a reflective and prayerful tone for the ordination liturgy, inviting the gathered faithful to support the new priest through prayer and encouragement. The message underscored that the gift of priesthood is not only for the ordained but for the entire Church, called together to share in Christ’s mission of love and service.
