Madurai, March 7, 2026: A powerful Lenten stage play depicting the life and witness of Stan Swamy was presented by the Youth Movement of St. Sebastian’s Church, Ellis Nagar, drawing parishioners into a deep reflection on faith, justice and Christian witness.
Titled “Not a Silent Spectator, but a Martyr” (Mouna Satchi Alla Maraisatchi), the play was staged on Friday evening as part of the parish’s Lenten observances. The performance followed the Stations of the Cross and Holy Mass, creating a solemn and prayerful atmosphere that helped the audience enter more deeply into the spirit of the season.
Centred on the life of Fr. Swamy, the play portrayed the courage and conviction of a priest who stood firmly with the marginalised and spoke out against social injustice. For nearly a month, members of the parish youth movement devoted themselves to intensive rehearsals, working diligently to bring his story to life on stage.
The script, written by Fr. Nithin Prabhu, presented the narrative as a “living Gospel,” inviting the audience to reflect on the Christian call to stand for truth and justice. Through dramatic scenes and heartfelt dialogue, the performers depicted Fr. Swamy not merely as a witness to injustice but as one who paid a heavy personal price for defending the dignity and rights of the oppressed.
The production was organised under the guidance of the parish priest, Fr. Joachin, and involved the active participation of parish youth, children and elders. Their collective effort transformed the stage into a space of remembrance and testimony, as performers sought to embody the ideals and mission associated with Fr. Swamy’s life.
The event was supported by parish volunteers, donors and well-wishers whose contributions helped bring the initiative to fruition and enabled the message of the play to reach a wider section of the parish community.
At the conclusion of the performance, Stephen SJ delivered a reflective address, sharing personal memories of travelling and working with Fr. Swamy. Recalling those experiences with emotion, he praised the youth for using the medium of drama to inspire awareness and encourage social transformation.
As the Church continues its Lenten journey of reflection and renewal, the parish initiative to present the life of a committed advocate for justice as a Gospel message was widely appreciated. Parishioners remained until the final curtain, applauding the young performers for their dedication and their thoughtful tribute to a life of courage and faith.
