Youth Deepen Understanding of Liturgy at ENLIGHT Session in Shivamogga

Shivamogga, Karnataka, March 22, 2026: In an effort to foster a deeper appreciation of the Church’s liturgical life among young people, an “ENLIGHT – Enlightening on the Liturgy” session was held on March 21 at Sacred Heart Cathedral, drawing an enthusiastic participation of youth and students from the cathedral unit.

The formation programme, organised jointly by the Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM) and Young Catholic Students/Young Students Movement (YCS/YSM) Cathedral Unit, aimed to deepen participants’ understanding of the meaning and significance of the liturgy in the life of the Church.

The session was inaugurated by Fr. Nelson D’Souza, alongside Fr. Jostro MSFS, ICYM Cathedral Unit President Mr. Raju, and YCS/YSM Cathedral Unit President Mr. Jeeva Stalin. The dignitaries formally opened the programme by lighting the ceremonial lamp, a gesture symbolising the invocation of divine guidance.

In his introductory remarks, Fr. Jostro underscored the centrality of liturgy in Christian life, urging young people to move beyond passive attendance and embrace active, conscious participation in the Church’s worship.

The highlight of the programme was the keynote session led by Fr. Nelson D’Souza, who offered a comprehensive yet accessible explanation of the liturgy. Addressing the gathering, he unpacked key elements such as the meaning of liturgy, the importance of active participation, the role of symbols, and proper conduct during the Holy Eucharist. He also elaborated on the roles of various liturgical ministers and the significance of gestures such as bowing, kissing, and incensing the altar.

Emphasising the spiritual depth of the Eucharistic celebration, Fr. D’Souza reminded participants that the Holy Eucharist is not merely a ritual or tradition, but a profound encounter with Christ that remains central at every stage of human life. He also touched upon the importance of the sacraments as channels of grace in the Christian journey.

A total of 73 youth and students took part in the session, engaging attentively in the formation process. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks and a closing prayer, followed by the distribution of certificates to all participants, marking the successful completion of the initiative.
