HUNSUR, Mysore, October 10, 2026: Around 150 students from three southern states gathered at St Joseph Institutions, Hunsur, in Mysuru district, Karnataka, on October 9 for the three-day Social Change Agents’ Forum (SCAF) Convention 2026, organised by the Ursuline Franciscan Educational Society (UFES), Mangalore, to promote social responsibility and leadership among young people.
Held under the theme “Drive the Change, Build the Future,” the convention opened with a public awareness march through Hunsur. Students presented tableaus highlighting the prevention of drug addiction and child marriage, while a street play on waste management encouraged residents to maintain cleanliness and practise civic responsibility.
Inaugurating the convention, Bishop Francis Serrao of Mysuru called for a society rooted in unity, harmony and mutual concern. He stressed that lasting transformation requires a fundamental shift in people’s mindsets and attitudes towards life.
Commending UFES for its efforts to nurture humanitarian values among young people, Bishop Serrao wished the convention success.
Manasa M, Commissioner of Hunsur Municipality, urged students to recognise their potential to address social problems rather than remain passive observers. She encouraged them to take an active role in improving their communities.
Manjunath J, Tahsildar of Hunsur and guest of honour, emphasised that education should extend beyond personal achievement. He said it must also equip young people to understand the needs of others and respond with generosity and compassion.
Sr Milly Fernandes, President of UFES, called on the participants to face societal challenges with courage and take responsibility for shaping a better future through their decisions and actions.
Sr Rita Vas, Vice-President of UFES, expressed gratitude on behalf of the organisers. Sr Philomena Noronha, Secretary of UFES, along with Sr Juliana Pinto and Sr Lydia Serrao, were also present.
The convention, which concludes on October 11, features motivational sessions and stories of young change-makers from different parts of Karnataka. The interactions aim to strengthen students’ leadership abilities, deepen their understanding of social issues and inspire them to respond to the needs of their communities.
Through SCAF, UFES seeks to nurture a generation that values compassion, service and civic responsibility, encouraging young people to turn their awareness of social challenges into meaningful action.
