Oct 9, 2026: The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Navanethem “Navi” Pillay, a South African jurist of Indian Tamil origin, in recognition of her efforts to promote peace and international law. The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the award on 9 October, recognising her contribution to strengthening international legal institutions and ensuring accountability for serious crimes.
Born in Durban, South Africa, to a family of Indian Tamil origin, Pillay built a distinguished legal career during and after apartheid. In 1967, she became the first woman to establish a law practice in Natal and later became the first non-white woman appointed to South Africa’s High Court in 1995.
Her career has spanned national and international justice. She served as president of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, where her work contributed to landmark legal recognition that rape and sexual violence could constitute crimes against humanity and acts of genocide. She later served as a judge at the International Criminal Court and as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014.
Pillay also chaired the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory from 2021 to 2025. She is an ad hoc judge at the International Court of Justice in the case in which Myanmar is accused of genocide.
In announcing the award, the Norwegian Nobel Committee highlighted Pillay’s longstanding commitment to universal legal principles and her role in strengthening international justice. The committee also underscored the importance of international law at a time when legal institutions face growing pressure and conflicts continue to challenge global peace.
The award recognises Pillay’s work in advancing accountability for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide, and reinforces the role of international law in resolving conflicts without violence.
The Nobel Peace Prize will be presented in Oslo, Norway, on 10 December, the anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel, who established the awards in his will.
