Vijayawada, April 1, 2026:
In a sign of the Church’s growing engagement with contemporary media, more than 100 priests of the diocese of Vijayawada gathered at the Bishop’s House on March 30 for a unique formation session titled 'The Chosen Encounter', exploring new pathways for proclaiming the Gospel in today’s digital age.
Organised as part of the clergy recollection, the session sought to equip priests with practical tools to integrate faith formation with modern communication platforms.
The initiative reflects a wider pastoral shift within the Church in India toward embracing media as a vital space for sharing the Gospel.
The session was led by Archbishop Thomas Tharayil, who served as the principal resource person. Drawing on his pastoral experience, he guided the clergy in understanding the power of storytelling in digital spaces and its potential to deepen faith engagement among diverse audiences.
Bishop Raja Rao of Vijayawada formally introduced Ajin Joseph, representing the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI), situating the initiative within broader national efforts to strengthen outreach through media.
In his presentation, Ajin Joseph highlighted the global impact of The Chosen as an effective digital missionary resource. He encouraged priests to actively promote the series across parishes, schools, and youth ministries, urging sustained engagement throughout 2026 as part of a coordinated outreach effort.
He also introduced Prasanth Merugu as the regional coordinator for the initiative under the Telugu Catholic Bishops’ Council (TCBC) and the Vijayawada region, tasked with supporting local implementation.
The gathering further drew attention to the CCBI’s “Tell Everyone” campaign, which is being rolled out in preparation for the theatrical release of The Chosen: Crucifixion, expected in early 2027.
Later, during the Chrism Mass at the diocesan cathedral, Bishop Raja Rao of Vijayawada expressed gratitude to Ajin Joseph on behalf of the presbyterium. Both he and Prasanth Merugu were felicitated in recognition of their contributions to advancing media-based outreach in the region.
The Chosen Encounter marks a significant step in the Church’s mission to engage contemporary culture, underscoring a renewed commitment to proclaim the Gospel creatively and effectively in an increasingly digital world.
