April 13, 2026 :The president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Archbishop Paul S. Coakley, has expressed disappointment over remarks made by former US President Donald Trump regarding Pope Leo XIV.
In a statement, Archbishop Coakley said he was “disheartened” by what he described as disparaging words directed at the Holy Father. He emphasized that the Pope should not be viewed as a political figure or rival, but rather as a spiritual leader.
“The Pope is not his rival; nor is the Pope a politician,” he stated, underlining that the role of the Pope is rooted in faith and pastoral responsibility.
Highlighting the essence of the papal office, Archbishop Coakley noted that the Pope, as the Vicar of Christ, is called to speak the truth of the Gospel and work for the care of souls. His remarks reiterated that the mission of the Church transcends political divisions and remains focused on spiritual guidance.
The statement comes amid ongoing reactions to comments made about Pope Leo, drawing attention to the distinction between religious leadership and political discourse.
