New Delhi, January 24, 2025: The United Christian Forum (UCF) has raised concerns over escalating persecution against Christians in India in a recent press release, warning that unchecked violence and government inaction could threaten the community’s identity before 2050. According to UCF’s 2024 report, attacks have risen dramatically, from 127 in 2014 to 834 by December 2024.
Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh have emerged as hotspots, with 209 and 165 cases reported in 2024, respectively. UCF officials stated that many incidents remain unreported due to fear of retribution and impunity. Systematic violence has been exacerbated by elements of the justice system failing to act, leaving innocent pastors, women, and children in jail while perpetrators walk free.
“This is a crisis brewing in plain sight,” said Dr. Michael Williams, President of UCF. “The Christian community, which has long been a peaceful and integral part of India’s diverse society, is now living in fear. These attacks are not just numbers—they represent shattered lives, destroyed communities, and families torn apart.”
The report highlighted:
Violence spiked during Christmas 2024, with 14 attacks on Christian gatherings. Vulnerable groups, including 154 women, 342 Dalits, and 354 Tribals, were heavily affected.
In response, over 400 senior Christian leaders and 30 Church groups submitted an appeal to President Draupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 31, 2024, urging immediate action to protect religious freedom.
Of the 834 incidents, only 59 were registered as First Information Reports (FIRs), exposing a lack of transparency and enforcement of minority rights. The UCF demands unbiased investigations and strict accountability for those responsible.
The UCF operates a toll-free helpline (1-800-208-4545) to assist victims, offering legal guidance and support to those unaware of their rights. The organization calls on the government to act decisively, ensuring justice and safeguarding India’s democratic values for all citizens.
