For the Jubilee Year of 2025, the Vatican has designated eight holy sites within the Diocese of Mangalore as Jubilee pilgrimage sites. Catholics who make a pilgrimage to one of these four sites during the Jubilee year and fulfill a few conditions receive a special plenary indulgence.
A plenary indulgence is a grace granted by the Catholic Church, through the merits of Jesus Christ, to remove the temporal punishment due to sin. This indulgence applies only to sins that have already been forgiven in confession. Essentially, a plenary indulgence restores the soul to the state it was in at the time of baptism.
Furthermore, the indulgence can be applied not only to the individual but also to souls in purgatory, with the possibility of obtaining two plenary indulgences for the deceased in a single day.
The eight holy sites in the Diocese of Mangalore that have been designated as Jubilee pilgrimage sites are as follows:
1. Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Cathedral, Mangalore, Karnātaka
2. Church of St. Lawrence, Bondel, Karnātaka
3. Church of Our Lady of Pompei, Urwa, Karnātaka
4. Chapel of St. Anthony, Jeppu, Karnātaka
5. Church of St. Joseph Vaz, Mudipu, Karnātaka
6. Shrine of St. Jude, Pakshikere, Karnātaka
7. Church of the Infant Jesus, Bantwal, Karnātaka
8. Church of Our Lady of Dolours, Bela, Kerala
To receive a plenary indulgence during the Jubilee Year, pilgrims must meet certain conditions. In addition to visiting one of the above-mentioned Jubilee churches, the faithful must meet the following requirements:
Detachment from all sin: This includes even venial sins. The pilgrim must approach the indulgence with a heart genuinely seeking reconciliation with God.
Sacramental confession: The pilgrim must avail of the sacrament of confession, either before or after visiting the pilgrimage site, to ensure the forgiveness of sins. While a single confession can be used for multiple plenary indulgences, frequent confessions are encouraged to help deepen one’s spiritual conversion and purification.
Holy Communion: The faithful must receive Holy Communion, ideally on the same day as the pilgrimage, to strengthen their bond with Christ and the Church.
Prayer for the intentions of the Pope: The pilgrim is required to offer a prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father. A simple prayer, such as an Our Father and a Hail Mary, is suggested.
These conditions ensure that the plenary indulgence is received with a sincere heart, and they help foster deeper conversion, reconciliation, and spiritual growth during the Jubilee Year. Pilgrims are encouraged to take full advantage of this opportunity to deepen their faith and experience the grace of this extraordinary spiritual blessing.
