Oct 3, 2026: You pray about marriage. You watch friends get engaged, attend weddings and hear relatives ask, “When is it your turn?” Sometimes, the waiting can leave you wondering whether God has forgotten your prayer. But trusting God’s timing does not mean simply sitting back and waiting for something to happen. It means learning to live with hope while also asking what you can faithfully do with the opportunities in front of you.
Your Life Is Not on Hold
Waiting for marriage does not mean waiting for life to begin.
This season can be a time to grow in faith, build meaningful friendships, discover your strengths and become more aware of the kind of person you want to become. Instead of making marriage the condition for happiness, ask yourself: Am I becoming the kind of person who can love, communicate, forgive and build a healthy marriage?
Ask yourself:
Am I so focused on when I will get married that I am forgetting to live the life I have today?
What can I grow in—emotionally, spiritually or personally—while I am waiting?
Am I Simply Waiting—or Am I Taking a Step?
Trusting God does not mean becoming passive.
If marriage is something you genuinely desire, it is reasonable to take responsible steps towards meeting people. That might mean being open to introductions through family and friends, participating in parish communities, attending Catholic gatherings or exploring reputable Catholic matrimonial platforms.
You can pray for the right relationship while also creating opportunities for one to develop.
Ask yourself:
Am I simply waiting for someone to appear, or am I actually making myself available to meet people?
Have I been open to genuine opportunities to meet someone, including through trusted Catholic matrimony platforms or my wider community?
Pray for More Than “Someone”
It is natural to pray, “Lord, send me the right person.” But your prayer can go deeper.
Ask God to prepare you for marriage, not simply to bring marriage to you. Pray for wisdom to recognise a healthy relationship, courage to walk away from one that is not, healing from past experiences and the patience to make decisions without fear.
You might pray: “Lord, prepare my heart to love well. Help me recognise what is good, let go of what is not, and trust You without becoming passive.”
Ask yourself:
Am I only asking God to change my circumstances, or am I also asking Him to change and prepare me?
What qualities do I need to develop before I can build the kind of marriage I am praying for?
Don’t Measure Your Life by Someone Else’s Timeline
It can be difficult when someone younger than you gets married, a close friend announces an engagement or social media seems full of wedding photographs. But another person's timeline is not a measurement of your own.
Their engagement does not mean you are behind. Their marriage does not mean God has given them something and forgotten you. You can celebrate another person's happiness without turning it into a judgement about your own life.
When comparison begins, step away from the question, “Why not me?” and return to “What is God asking me to do today?”
Ask yourself:
Am I genuinely happy for others, or have their milestones become a source of frustration about my own life?
How often am I comparing my journey with what I see on social media?
Trusting God Does Not Mean Settling
Waiting can become exhausting. At times, loneliness or family pressure may make almost any relationship seem better than being single. But trusting God's timing does not mean saying yes simply because you are afraid that another opportunity will never come.
A healthy marriage requires mutual respect, honesty, shared values, freedom and a willingness to grow together. Do not allow fear of waiting to make an important decision for you.
Ask yourself:
Am I considering someone because I genuinely see the possibility of a healthy relationship, or simply because I am tired of waiting?
Have I become so afraid of being alone that I am willing to overlook things I should take seriously?
Use the Waiting Season Well
If marriage is something you genuinely desire, be open to it. Meet people. Build friendships. Participate in your parish community. Allow trusted people to introduce you to others. Work on your communication, emotional maturity and understanding of relationships.
Trusting God is not the same as doing nothing.
You can pray while taking responsible steps. You can hope while continuing to live fully.
Ask yourself:
What is one practical step I can take this month to become more open to meeting someone?
Am I making room in my life for a relationship, or have I become so comfortable with my routine that I am no longer open to new possibilities?
You Are Not Forgotten
You may not know when marriage will happen, or whether your journey will look exactly as you imagined. But you do not have to put your joy, growth or purpose on hold while you wait.
Perhaps the prayer for this season is not simply, “Lord, when?” but also, “Lord, what are You inviting me to become while I wait?”
Marriage may be part of your hope for the future, but it does not have to define the value of your present. Wait with hope. Prepare with wisdom. Take the steps you can. And leave the timing to God.
