Seethampeta, Jan 12, 2025: Authentic missionary work must be grounded in selfless service, cultural respect and a deep commitment to the poor, Bishop Dhaman Kumar of Nalgonda said while reflecting on 125 years of missionary presence at the Fatima Matha Shrine, Seethampeta.
In his homily during the quasquicentennial celebrations of the shrine, Bishop Dhaman Kumar underlined that the Church’s mission finds its true meaning when it walks alongside the marginalised, particularly tribal communities. Recalling the long journey of evangelisation in the Srikakulam region, he highlighted the significant role played by missionaries of the Society of Jesus (SJ) in nurturing faith through compassion, sacrifice and steadfast service.
He noted that missionary discipleship is not merely about preaching but about sharing life with the people, understanding their culture and standing with them in times of hardship. The enduring presence of missionaries among the tribal population, he said, remains a living testimony to the Gospel lived in action.
The Holy Eucharist was presided over by Bishop Pollemera Jayarao of the Eluru Diocese, whose prayerful leadership and melodious singing added to the solemnity of the liturgical celebration. Bishop Rayarala Vijaya Kumar of Srikakulam, in his message, also recalled the historical growth of the mission and acknowledged the dedicated service rendered over generations.
The celebration drew Provincials of SJ and MSFS, numerous priests, religious and a large number of faithful from across the diocese. Organised under the leadership of Fr. Vidya Sagar, SJ, with guidance from Fr. Stani, SJ, Provincial, the event highlighted the enduring missionary legacy of the region.
The liturgy reflected local culture through Savara tribal hymns, symbolising a faith deeply rooted in the life of the people. Tribal faithful from various parishes participated actively, expressing gratitude for 125 years of faith-filled service and renewed commitment to carry forward the missionary spirit.
