Tremors Felt Across Bihar as Magnitude 7.1 Earthquake Strikes Near Nepal’s Lobuche

Bihar, January 7, 2025: A powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.1 struck near Nepal’s Lobuche early Tuesday morning at 6:35 a.m., the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported. The tremors were experienced in various parts of North India, particularly in Bihar's districts of Patna, Sheohar, Sitamarhi, and Muzaffarpur. The tremors were strong enough to compel people to evacuate their homes in haste. Officials are keeping a close watch on the situation, with no reports of casualties or damage at this time.

Bishop Cajetan of Muzaffarpur, who was offering Mass during the tremors, said, “I was almost completing the gospel reading when everyone clearly felt the tremors and became worried. This occurred approximately around 6:35 a.m.” He added that no damage was observed and life has since returned to normalcy.

The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) confirmed the quake’s epicenter in the Tibet Autonomous Region near Nepal, located at 28.86° North latitude and 87.51° East longitude, with a depth of 10 kilometers. Residents in the affected areas fled their homes and sought shelter in open spaces as the ground shook.

The seismic activity along the Nepal-China border serves as a reminder of the region’s vulnerability to earthquakes, which often cause widespread disruption. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious as aftershocks remain a possibility.
