New Delhi, March 8, 2026: On International Women’s Day, the world celebrates the strength, resilience, and achievements of women. For Christians, this day also becomes a moment of deeper reflection — a chance to remember the remarkable women whose faith, courage, and devotion shaped the story of salvation.
From the very first pages of Sacred Scripture to the glorious moment of the Resurrection, women appear not merely as background figures but as courageous witnesses to God’s work. They were mothers, prophets, leaders, disciples, and messengers of divine truth.
Their lives continue to inspire believers today, reminding us that God often chooses the humble, the faithful, and the courageous to carry forward His plan of love.
Among all women in Scripture, none shines brighter than Mary, Mother of Jesus.
At the Annunciation, when the angel revealed God’s extraordinary plan, Mary responded with the words that changed the course of human history: “Let it be done to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38).
Her humble “yes” allowed the Incarnation to take place. In Catholic tradition, Mary stands as the model of faith, humility, and total surrender to God’s will. Her trust reminds believers that even when God’s plan seems mysterious, faith can open the door to miracles.
The story of Eve begins in the Book of Genesis. As the first woman created by God, Eve plays a central role in humanity’s origin.
While her story reflects the reality of human weakness and the tragedy of sin, it also points toward hope. Christian tradition sees in Genesis the first promise of redemption — a promise fulfilled through Jesus Christ.
Eve’s story reminds us that even in humanity’s failure, God’s mercy and plan for salvation remain stronger.
Sarah, the wife of Abraham, experienced the astonishing power of God’s promise.
Though advanced in age and long considered unable to have children, she gave birth to Isaac. Her story reminds believers that God’s plans often unfold beyond human logic or expectation.
What seems impossible to the world becomes possible through faith.
The story of Ruth is one of the most moving testimonies of loyalty and devotion.
After losing her husband, Ruth refused to abandon her mother-in-law Naomi and declared: “Your people shall be my people, and your God my God.”
Her faithfulness was richly rewarded. Ruth eventually became an ancestor of Jesus Christ, showing that God can transform acts of simple love into moments of eternal significance.
Esther stands as a symbol of courage.
As queen, she risked her life by approaching the king to save her people from destruction. Her bravery demonstrates that faith sometimes requires bold action and moral courage.
Esther’s story reminds believers that God often places people in positions of influence precisely when they are needed to stand for truth and justice.
At a time when Israel faced turmoil and uncertainty, Deborah rose as a leader.
She served as both prophet and judge, guiding the people with wisdom and courage. Deborah’s story reveals that God calls women to leadership and entrusts them with great responsibility in His plan.
Her life challenges believers to recognize and celebrate the gifts God gives to women within the Church and society.
One of the most powerful figures in the New Testament is Mary Magdalene.
On the morning of the Resurrection of Jesus, she encountered the risen Christ and was entrusted with announcing the Good News to the apostles.
Because of this mission, she is often called the “Apostle to the Apostles.” Her story reminds believers that the first proclamation of Easter — the heart of Christian faith — was carried by a woman.
The sisters Martha of Bethany and Mary of Bethany offer a beautiful image of the Christian life.
Martha represents loving service, actively caring for others, while Mary represents contemplative listening at the feet of the Lord.
Together they remind believers that a balanced spiritual life includes both action and prayer — serving Christ while also resting in His presence.
The stories of these women reveal a powerful truth: God works through ordinary people who trust Him.
Their lives demonstrate faith in uncertainty, courage in danger, loyalty in hardship, and devotion in everyday life.
For Catholics around the world, these women are not merely historical figures. They are spiritual companions whose witness encourages believers to live boldly for Christ.
As the Church reflects on International Women’s Day, their stories invite us to thank God for the countless women who continue this legacy today — mothers, teachers, religious sisters, leaders, and young women whose faith quietly shapes the world.
Just as in Scripture, God is still calling women to courage, holiness, and mission.
And through their faith, the story of salvation continues to unfold.
