Srikakulam, November 17, 2025 — Srikakulam diocese in Hyderabad celebrated the World Day of the Poor with a large-scale free medical camp at the Bishop’s House, providing healthcare, food, and support to economically vulnerable families across the region. Organised as part of the Church’s global observance highlighting solidarity with the poor, the initiative offered essential medical services through the support of a full clinical team from King James Hospital.
The programme was led by Bishop Rayarala Vijayakumar of Srikakulam, with coordination by Fr. Alphons, Director of the Social Service Centre. Fr Dusi Devaraj, Vicar General, and Fr Paul Bhusan were present throughout the event, offering guidance and supporting the beneficiaries. Their collective involvement underscored the diocese’s commitment to compassionate community outreach.
The medical team from King James Hospital conducted eye examinations, ECG and cardiac screening, blood tests, blood pressure and sugar checks, general medical consultations, health counselling, and distributed free medicines. The services were offered entirely at no cost, enabling elderly residents, labourers, and low-income families to access healthcare that is often out of reach.
The camp ran through the day and saw a steady turnout of beneficiaries, many of whom expressed gratitude for the timely assistance. Alongside medical care, the diocese also organised the distribution of clothing, offering practical support to individuals and families in need.
Sunday’s outreach was integrated with the diocese’s ongoing weekly initiative, where free lunch is served to the poor at the Bishop’s House. This long-standing tradition aims to ensure consistent nutritional support for those facing hardship and took on added significance on the World Day of the Poor.
The observance included reflections inspired by Pope Francis, who has consistently reminded the global Church that “the poor are the true passports to heaven” and that “the poor are a resource; they help us live the Gospel in its most authentic form.”
The day also recalled the words of Pope Leo XIV, who wrote: “A living Church is recognised by its love for the poor, for it is among them that Christ chooses to dwell.”
The diocese encouraged local communities to extend similar acts of service throughout the year, reinforcing the belief that meaningful support for those in need requires sustained commitment.
