South Africa Midfielder Jayden Adams Dies Aged 25 Weeks After Historic World Cup Campaign

South Africa, July 11, 2026: South Africa and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams has died at the age of 25, just weeks after representing Bafana Bafana in their historic FIFA World Cup campaign.

The South African Football Players Union (SAFPU), Mamelodi Sundowns and South Africa's Ministry of Sport, Arts and Culture confirmed his death on Saturday. The cause of death has not been disclosed.

According to Western Cape South African Police Service spokesperson F.C. van Wyk, police have opened an inquest after the body of a 25-year-old man was discovered at a property in Military Road, Schotschekloof, Cape Town, on Saturday morning. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.

Adams played a key role in South Africa's World Cup campaign, starting two of the team's three group-stage matches against Mexico and Czechia. He also came off the bench in a 1-0 victory over South Korea, which secured South Africa's first-ever place in the World Cup knockout stage. He was an unused substitute in the Round of 32 defeat to Canada.

In a statement, SAFPU described Adams' passing as an "immeasurable loss" to his family, teammates and South African football, praising him for representing his country with pride, courage and distinction.

Mamelodi Sundowns said the club was "devastated" by the loss of the talented midfielder and extended its deepest condolences to his family, asking that their privacy be respected during this difficult time.

South Africa's Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, paid tribute to Adams, describing him as a humble and dedicated professional whose commitment to the national team reflected his outstanding character.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino also expressed his condolences, saying Adams would be greatly missed by the global football community.

Earlier this year, Adams helped Mamelodi Sundowns win the CAF Champions League. He had dedicated his winners' medal to his former Stellenbosch FC teammate Oshwin Andries, who died in 2023.

Adams' final appearance came in South Africa's victory over South Korea at the FIFA World Cup, bringing an abrupt end to a promising football career that had earned admiration across the country.
