Simla-Chandigarh Diocese Strengthens Synodal Mission in Line with National Pastoral Vision

Chandigarh, March 26, 2026 — The Diocese of Simla-Chandigarh has taken a significant step forward in shaping a participatory and mission-oriented Church, as clergy, religious and lay representatives gathered at the Diocesan Pastoral Centre on March 23 to advance the implementation of its Diocesan Pastoral Plan 2026 in harmony with the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India National Pastoral Plan 2033.

The meeting reflected a deepening commitment to the pillars of communion, participation and mission, echoing the Church’s synodal journey. Fr. Charles Leon, Executive Secretary of the VSCR of the CCBI, animated the sessions, offering pastoral guidance on integrating the national vision into local realities. He emphasised the importance of synodality, collaborative ministry and rekindling missionary zeal among the faithful.

In a recollection preached earlier for the clergy ahead of the Chrism Mass, Father Leon invited priests to rediscover their identity as joyful ministers of Christ. He encouraged them to embrace their vocation with renewed enthusiasm, rooted in Christ’s mission and expressed through dedicated service to God’s people.

The gathering also marked a moment of transition as the diocese bid farewell to Mr. Sameer Lakra, Diocesan and Regional Laity Secretary, who will be moving to Ranchi. Bishop Sahaya Thatheus Thomas of Simla - Chandigarh honoured his contributions in the presence of Ignatius L. Mascarenhas, along with clergy, religious and lay faithful.

In his address, Bishop Thomas acknowledged the dedicated service of both Father Leon and Mr. Lakra, underlining the importance of committed leadership and shared responsibility in strengthening the Church’s mission.

The meeting concluded with a renewed resolve among participants to journey together as a synodal Church, striving to respond faithfully to contemporary pastoral challenges while remaining rooted in the Gospel mission.
