Patna, May 22, 2026: Strengthening legal awareness and institutional preparedness among Christian minority institutions formed the central focus of a three-day seminar held at Atma Darshan, Digha, Patna, from May 17 to 20.
The seminar brought together 45 participants, including Provincials, Principals, Managers, Treasurers and heads of religious, educational and charitable institutions from Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh.
Organised under the leadership of Fr. K.M. Joseph SJ, a noted legal expert on Fundamental and Minority Rights under the Constitution of India, the programme aimed to help Church-run institutions navigate growing legal and administrative challenges. Fr. Joseph, who has practised before the High Courts of Patna and Ranchi for more than three decades, guided participants through key constitutional protections available to minority institutions.
The sessions addressed a wide range of issues affecting Christian institutions today, including Constitutional and Minority Rights, governance and administrative procedures, employment and service laws, cyber law compliance, safeguarding policies under the POCSO and POSH Acts, land and property disputes, FCRA regulations, and legal remedies through courts and tribunals.
An experienced panel of resource persons conducted the various sessions. Fr. Peter Ladis led discussions on service law, cyber security, the applicability of RTI and RTE provisions, and anti-conversion legislation. Other resource persons included Fr. Peter Martin SJ, Sr. Helen CHF, Sr. Cynthia CJ, Fr. Dharam Kishore and Sr. Anupriya SND, who offered practical guidance on safeguarding protocols, institutional documentation, disciplinary procedures and legal drafting.
Participants described the seminar as a timely and much-needed initiative that enhanced their understanding of constitutional rights and strengthened their capacity for responsible institutional governance.
The programme was widely appreciated as an important step towards promoting legal empowerment, accountability and effective administration within Christian educational and charitable institutions in India.
