SDM Society Installs New Superior General, Councillors in Chennai

Chennai, March 2, 2026 — The Society of St. Eugene De Mazenod marked a significant milestone with the solemn installation of its newly elected Superior General and councillors at the Anbagam Chapel, the Mother House of the Society. Held under the motto “Strengthened by the Spirit, United for the Mission,” the celebration reflected continuity with the Society’s missionary legacy and a renewed commitment to its founding charism.

Fr. Anthoni Adimai SDM was formally installed as Superior General, assisted by Fr. Maria Robert SDM as Vicar General, and councillors Fr. Andrew Gaspar SDM, Fr. Stephen Kulandairaj SDM, and Fr. Kiran Kumar Battu SDM. Members of the SDM family were joined by representatives of dioceses, collaborating religious congregations, lay associates, and benefactors.

The liturgy was presided over by Bishop Neethinatan of the Diocese of Chingleput, who serves as ecclesiastical adviser to the Society, underscoring the close bond between the congregation and the local Church.

The rite began with a solemn procession, followed by hymns and prayers invoking the Holy Spirit. After the proclamation of the Word of God, Fr. Arul Max SDM formally presented the newly elected leadership, affirming their canonical election in accordance with the Society’s Constitutions and Statutes.

During the profession of faith, the Superior General and councillors pledged fidelity to the teachings of the Church and to the Society’s missionary charism. A symbolic moment of the ceremony was the handing over of the Constitution by Fr. Anthonysamy, former Superior General, signifying continuity in leadership and mission. The installation prayer invoked divine wisdom, courage, and compassion for the new administration.

In his inaugural address, Fr. Anthoni Adimai SDM highlighted the challenges facing religious life and called for deeper fraternity, intercultural dialogue, and renewed service to the poor. He urged members to strengthen prayer, community life, and missionary outreach in fidelity to the founding vision.

The installation, leaders said, marks not merely a transition in governance but a renewed phase in the Society’s apostolic journey, grounded in unity, discernment, and missionary hope.
