Sankranthi Marked by Outreach to the Poor in Srikakulam, Andra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh, January 12, 2026: On the occasion of Sankranthi, a charitable outreach programme was organised for the poor and needy, with the distribution of bed sheets, sarees and food, reflecting the spirit of compassion associated with the festival.

The initiative was carried out under the leadership of Rayarala Vijaya Kumar, Bishop of the Srikakulam Diocese. Emphasising the Church’s call to serve the marginalised, the Bishop personally distributed the essential items to those in need, expressing his concern and solidarity with the poor.

Drawing inspiration from the teachings of the Church and the message of Pope Leo in his letter Dilexit, which urges the faithful to love and serve the poor, the Bishop underlined the importance of concrete acts of charity, especially during festive times.

A large number of beneficiaries took part in the programme and received the support with gratitude and joy. The event was organised by Fr Alphonse along with other priests, under the guidance and encouragement of the Bishop, ensuring the smooth conduct of the distribution.

The programme began with an opening prayer, invoking God’s blessings on all present, and concluded with a thanksgiving prayer. Organisers said the event stood as a meaningful expression of Christian love, service and solidarity with the poor, reinforcing the message of care for the vulnerable during Sankranthi.

The initiative highlighted the Diocese’s continued commitment to supporting the underprivileged and translating faith into action through service to those most in need.
