Sandesha Awards 2026 Honour Creativity Rooted in Social Responsibility

Mangaluru, Jan 28, 2026: The Sandesha Foundation for Culture and Education presented the Sandesha Awards 2026 on January 21 at the Sandesha Institute Grounds, recognising individuals and institutions whose creative contributions reflect enduring cultural, ethical, and human values. The annual awards celebrate excellence in literature, art, media, education, music, and social service, with a focus on creativity guided by conscience and commitment to society.

Addressing the gathering, Bishop Henry D’Souza of Ballari, President of the Sandesha Foundation, highlighted the organisation’s 35-year journey in promoting social harmony through culture and literature. He said achievements gain true meaning only when rooted in love, respect, and coexistence, and reminded writers and artists of their responsibility as the conscience of society.

Calling unity in diversity the essence of India, Bishop D’Souza urged awardees to view the honour not merely as recognition but as a responsibility to strengthen peace, unity, and social cohesion.

Chief Guest Dr. Nagathihalli Chandrashekar—eminent filmmaker, writer, and lyricist—described the Foundation as a vital bridge connecting religions, languages, and cultures. He emphasised that art and literature must humanise society and counter intolerance, especially in times marked by growing divisions.

Praising the coastal region’s rich cultural heritage and literary awareness, Dr. Chandrashekar noted that the credibility of the Sandesha Awards lies in their transparent and merit-based selection process. He also encouraged young people to remain connected to reading and literature in the digital age, observing that the world today needs peace more than conflict.

The programme was attended by several dignitaries from religious, cultural, and public life, including Bishop Peter Paul Saldanha of the Diocese of Mangaluru, Shalette Pinto, Chairperson of the Karnataka Eco Tourism Board, Stany Alvares, President of the Konkani Sahitya Akademi, and Umar U. H., President of the Karnataka Beary Sahitya Akademi, reflecting broad support for the Foundation’s mission.

Earlier, Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo of Udupi, MLA D. Vedavyas Kamath, and MLC Ivan D’Souza visited the venue to convey their greetings to the awardees but were unable to attend the ceremony due to official commitments.

This year’s awards for literature were conferred on Dr. Na. Mogasale (Kannada), Patrick K. Moras (Konkani), and Indira Hegde (Tulu). Other recipients included S. G. Tungarenuka (Media), Simon Pais (Konkani Music), Srinivas G. Kappanna (Art), and Dr. Dattatreya Aralikatte (Education). The Navajeevana Rehabilitation Centre for the Differently Abled, Ballari, received a Special Honour.

The awardees were recognised not only for professional excellence but also for their sustained contribution to social values. The jury was commended for ensuring balance, social relevance, and meaningful impact in the selection process.

Reaffirming the Foundation’s vision, Director Fr. Sudeep Paul MSFS stressed the importance of ethical leadership and community-oriented cultural expression. Established in 1989, the Sandesha Foundation for Culture and Education continues to promote cultural education and artistic engagement through training programmes, festivals, seminars, and community initiatives. The Sandesha Awards remain a hallmark of excellence rooted in social responsibility and enduring human values.
