Salesian Missionary Formation Course Opens in Shillong

Shillong, September 3, 2026: The Salesian Missionary Formation Course 2026 began at Don Bosco Provincial House, Mawlai, Shillong, on September 1, bringing together members of the Salesian Family for reflection on missionary commitment and the missionary dimension of the Salesian vocation.

The annual programme seeks to deepen participants’ understanding of missionary service and renew their commitment to proclaiming Christ through the charism of St John Bosco.

Welcoming the participants, Fr Jeevan Lakra, SDB, Vice Provincial and Rector, reflected on the Salesian motto Da mihi animas, cetera tolle — “Give me souls, take away the rest.” He described missionaries as the “hands, feet and heart of Christ” and said that despite their diverse cultural, linguistic and social backgrounds, they are united by a common identity and mission entrusted to them by Jesus Christ.

Fr John Zosiama, SDB, Provincial, highlighted the significance of conducting the formation programme in Northeast India, particularly in Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland. He said the participants’ exposure to the region and its vibrant Christian communities could renew their missionary enthusiasm and strengthen their commitment to missionary life and service.

Fr Genesius Wanniang, SDB, Economer, underlined the distinctive character of Salesian missionary work, saying that missionaries are shaped by the charism of Don Bosco. The Salesian spirit, he noted, gives their missionary approach a distinctive identity and influences how they live and serve among the people.

The formation course includes prayer, reflection, spiritual renewal and sessions aimed at deepening participants’ understanding of the missionary dimension of the Salesian vocation.

Held in Shillong, the programme also provides participants an opportunity to encounter the people, culture and Christian communities of Northeast India. The experience is intended to strengthen their missionary commitment and equip them to witness to Christ through the Salesian charism.
