Early Life and Spiritual Calling

Saint Paul of the Cross was born Paolo Francesco Danei in Ovada, Italy, in 1694. Raised in a devout Catholic family, he developed a deep love for prayer and the teachings of Jesus from an early age.

As a young man, he became increasingly devoted to contemplating Christ’s suffering on the Cross. He believed that the Passion was not merely a story of pain but a powerful revelation of God’s love for humanity. This conviction would shape his entire life and ministry.

Founding the Passionists

In 1720, Paul experienced a strong spiritual calling to establish a religious community devoted to the Passion of Jesus. He wrote a rule for the new congregation and began gathering companions who shared his mission.

After years of perseverance and Church approval, the community developed into the Congregation of the Passion of Jesus Christ, commonly known as the Passionists. Its members committed themselves to prayer, community life and preaching about Christ’s suffering, death and saving love.

A Powerful Preacher and Spiritual Guide

Saint Paul became widely respected for his passionate preaching and spiritual guidance. He travelled to different communities, encouraging people to repent, deepen their faith and turn towards God.

He also wrote numerous letters offering advice to priests, religious communities and ordinary believers. His message was that remembering Christ’s Passion could bring strength during hardship and inspire greater compassion for those who suffer.

In 1771, he helped establish the first Passionist monastery for women, extending his spiritual mission to a contemplative community of religious sisters.

Death and Canonisation

After a lifetime devoted to prayer and ministry, Saint Paul of the Cross died in Rome on 18 October 1775. His reputation for holiness had already spread widely.

Pope Pius IX beatified him in 1852 and canonised him on 29 June 1867. Today, he is especially honoured as the founder of the Passionists and a model of devotion to Christ crucified.
