Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish in Dibrugarh, Assam, Celebrates Annual Parish Feast

Dibrugarh, Assam, July 7, 2025: The Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish in Dibrugarh celebrated its parish feast on July 6, coinciding with the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Bishop (Dr.) Albert Hemrom, the Bishop of Dibrugarh, led the celebration, which was held at the cathedral premises. Hundreds of faithful, including parishioners, clergy, religious, children, and youth, actively participated in the spiritually enriching and community-centred event.

This year’s celebration was particularly special, as a number of children belonging to the parish received the Sacraments of Holy Communion and Confirmation during the day's Eucharistic celebration.

Bp. Albert Hemrom presided over the Holy Eucharist, which was concelebrated by Rev. Fr. Cyril Purty (Parish Priest) and Fr. Gabriel Kujur (Assistant Parish Priest), along with several other clergy members.

During the Mass, the bishop administered the Sacrament of Confirmation to 35 children and the Sacrament of Holy Communion to 13 children from the parish.

In his homily, Bishop Hemrom reflected on the profound significance of the Sacred Heart of Jesus as a symbol of God’s infinite love, mercy, and compassion. Highlighting the pierced side of Christ from which blood and water flowed (John 19:34), he explained how this represents the birth of the Church and the source of salvation, forgiveness, and new life.

Addressing the newly confirmed children, the bishop urged them to become active witnesses of Christ within their parish community through prayer, acts of service, and participation in catechetical and social activities. He also encouraged them to use social media as a tool for spreading Gospel values.

Highlighting the vital role of the laity in building a vibrant parish community, Bishop Hemrom remarked, “A parish is not merely an institution but a spiritual family. It becomes strong and fruitful when every member—be it youth, elders, or children—actively contributes through prayer, service, and shared responsibility.”

He further reminded parents and catechists of their sacred responsibility in guiding the newly confirmed youth in their journey of faith. “Do not focus solely on academic success,” he said. “Help your children grow in prayer, faith, and service. Let their hearts be lit by the Sacred Heart of Jesus—a flame that never dies,” Bishop Hemrom added.

The celebration concluded with a fellowship meal and a vibrant cultural programme, organised by the parish youth and their families. The event beautifully showcased the unity and joy of the Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish community.
