As the summer sun blazes down upon us, scorching the earth and drying up every precious drop of moisture, countless voiceless creatures suffer in silence. Stray dogs roam the streets, tongues hanging out in desperation for a sip of water. Birds flutter from tree to tree, their tiny beaks parched, searching for relief. Cats hide under parked cars, seeking shade but finding no respite from thirst.
Amid this sweltering heat, we are called to be instruments of compassion. The season of Lent, which commenced yesterday, is a sacred time of reflection, sacrifice, and love. As we fast and pray, we must remember that kindness is also a form of devotion. These helpless creatures are not just stray animals; they are part of God’s magnificent creation. They, too, belong to Him. If we can be the hands that offer them relief, we are truly fulfilling our purpose as His children.
Providing water for thirsty animals is a simple yet profound act of mercy. A small bowl of clean water can mean the difference between life and death for an exhausted dog or a weary sparrow. This Lent, as the scorching days of summer set in, let us take it upon ourselves to place water bowls in spaces where these creatures roam.
Here are some places where you can leave bowls of water to quench their thirst:
1. Parish parking areas: Many stray animals linger near churches, hoping for scraps of food. Placing a water bowl in a quiet corner of your parish parking lot can offer them much-needed relief.
2. School parking areas: With permission from your school headmaster or teacher, place bowls of water near the parking area of your school.
3. Your verandah or balcony: Keep bowls filled with water, especially during the afternoons, in your verandah or balcony. This will help tiny birds or cats from the neighbourhood to qurnct their thirst.
4. Public gardens and quiet street corners: These places are often frequented by stray animals seeking shelter from the sun. Placing a few bowls of water in such areas can be a lifeline for several stray animals and birds.
This Lent, let your fast be more than just abstaining from food—let it be a fast from indifference. Open your heart and your home, even if it is just a tiny corner of your balcony. A small bowl of water might seem insignificant to us, but for these creatures, it is a gift of life. In the simple act of quenching another’s thirst—whether human or animal—we fulfill the will of our Creator. May our hands, like His, be vessels of mercy, and may our hearts be open to the silent cries of the voiceless.
A bowl of water is a small gesture, but to a thirsty soul, it is everything. Will you be the answer to their unspoken prayer?
