Guwahati, March 8, 2025 – The Archdiocese of Guwahati has appointed Fr. Raj Kapoor as its new Chancellor, effective immediately, according to an announcement made by the Archbishop's office this morning.
Fr. Kapoor previously served as the financial administrator of the archdiocese, bringing extensive administrative and theological expertise to his new role.
Recognised as a seasoned moral theologian and an experienced educator, he has held significant positions within the Catholic Church in Assam, including his tenure as the administrator of Oriens Theological Seminary and as the parish priest of Lumding. His leadership in these roles has earned him deep respect, and his appointment is expected to further the Archdiocese’s commitment to moral and educational excellence.
The Archbishop of Guwahati, Most Rev. John Moolachira, extended his congratulations to Fr. Kapoor and invoked God’s blessings upon him as he takes on his new responsibilities. The Archbishop also expressed gratitude to the outgoing Chancellor, Fr. Crosper Sangma, who dedicated 15 years to the position, playing a key role in the Archdiocese’s stability and growth.
As Chancellor, Fr. Kapoor will hold a crucial canonical position within the Archdiocese, ensuring the validity of key juridical acts, including decrees, rescripts, privileges, and dispensations. According to Canon Law, even in the event of a vacancy in the episcopal office due to the bishop’s retirement or passing, the Chancellor remains in office, providing continuity in governance.
Fr. Kapoor’s appointment marks a significant step forward for the Archdiocese of Guwahati as it continues its mission of faith, education, and moral leadership. The Catholic community in the region looks forward to his stewardship in guiding the Archdiocese through future challenges and opportunities.
