Prayagraj, 24 March, 2025 – A solemn Eucharistic celebration marked the centenary of Christian presence at Queen of the Apostles Church, Chatham Lines, Prayagraj, in the Diocese of Allahabad. Bishop Louis Mascarenhas, of Allahabad led the special Mass on 23 March, joined by around 30 priests, 75 nuns, and 100 lay faithful.
In his homily, Bishop Mascarenhas honoured the religious communities that have served the Church over the past century. He expressed deep gratitude to the Franciscans, Italian priests, Pauline priests, Sisters of the Pious Disciples, and, more recently, the Jesuits. He highlighted the Church’s enduring commitment to serving the sick, the poor, and young people.
The Pauline priests received particular recognition for their contributions to pastoral and social services. Their work in printing, youth ministry through Teenager and Yuva Sangam, and their role in Sunday liturgies and inspirational literature under Atmonnati Prakashan were praised. The late Rev. Fr. Leo Vecchor, S.S.P., was remembered for his 30 years of dedicated service as parish priest.
Despite a century of ministry, the Church remains a small but committed community, with around 30 active members. Bishop Mascarenhas emphasised that conversion was never the objective; rather, the Church has always prioritised compassion and service.
The Bishop unveiled a commemorative plaque marking the milestone. Mrs. Roseline shared her experiences, followed by reflections from Fr. Joby Mathew, S.S.P.; Fr. Jose Thayil, S.J., Acting Provincial of the Jesuits’ Patna Province; and Fr. Soosaimani, S.J., Jesuit Provincial of Delhi.
Bishop Mascarenhas addressed the gathering, commending the Jesuits and parishioners for their faith. The Brothers from St. Joseph’s Seminary performed a felicitation song, and Fr. Rajendran, S.J., Parish Priest, expressed appreciation, acknowledging the youth’s key role in the celebrations.
The centenary event stood as a testament to a century of faith, service, and dedication, ensuring that the legacy of Queen of the Apostles Church endures for generations to come.
