Prison Ministry of Mysore Celebrates Christmas at Central Prison

Mysore, Dec. 19, 2025: Calling on people to be “human first” and to turn away from negative and violent tendencies, Bishop Francis Serrao SJ of Mysore said that the message of Christmas invites love, compassion, forgiveness, reconciliation and renewal of life, especially in places where hope is often tested. The message was delivered at a Christmas celebration held at the Mysore Central Prison on December 17.


The programme was organised by the Prison Ministry of India (PMI), Mysore City Unit, under the Prison Ministry of the Diocese of Mysore. Bishop Francis Serrao SJ attended as the Chief Guest, while Mr. Seshumurthy, Chief Superintendent of the Central Prison, presided over the event.


On the occasion, the Syro-Malabar Carmel Catholic Association distributed 800 pairs of footwear to all the prison inmates as a Christmas gift. The celebration included a cultural programme presented by the novices of St. Anne’s Luzienne and children from Jyothi Nilaya School. Christmas carols were sung by the Capuchin Brothers.


Speaking at the event, Chief Superintendent Mr. Seshumurthy appreciated the services of the Prison Ministry in the prison and recalled his school days at St. Francis of Assisi School, Kollegal. He urged the gathering to practise the teachings of love and peace exemplified by Jesus Christ and said that every religion upholds the values of peace, love and human dignity. Dr. Michael Noronha, Coordinator of Karnataka Prison Ministry India, Prof. Jose Mathew and Mr. Joseph Johnson were also present as Guests of Honour.
